USS Oklahoma (BB-37) was a Nevada-class battleship built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation for the United States Navy, notable for being the first American class of oil-burning dreadnoughts. George A. De Long was born in Annville, PA in 1922. In 1941, he joined the Navy and went to boot camp in Newport, RI, then to Quartermaster School. He was in USS Oklahoma on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, then served in USS Helena and saw action at the Battle of the Solomon Islands. He served in USS Crater at the end of the war, and then in USS Dixie during the Bikini A-bomb test.
